Description

An elegant two-drawer commode with bombé front and sides, floral marquetry and chased bronze mounts. Veined marble top.

Bombé front and sides, cabriole legs, two drawers decorated with floral marquetry, chased bronze mounts and a veined marble top: this commode brings together the hallmarks of the Louis XV style.

Two-drawer commodes raised on tall legs, known as “sauteuses”, appeared in the mid-18th century. Their supple lines, free of right angles, and the interplay of rocaille bronzes — handles, escutcheons, chutes and sabots — made this one of the most widely reproduced styles of the 19th and 20th centuries.

This is a 20th-century Louis XV-inspired piece of fine proportions (W ~85 cm), easily accommodated in an entrance hall, drawing room or bedroom.
