Description
A wall panel decorated with a malachite bas-relief depicting a Mesoamerican dignitary in profile. Carved surround with geometric motifs.
A wall panel in the deep green of malachite: a dignitary in profile, wearing a tall headdress, stands out against a wooden ground, within a surround carved with glyphs and geometric motifs.
The subject draws on the great Maya reliefs, such as those of the city of Palenque in Mexico, where rulers are depicted in profile with their headdresses and ornaments. This type of decorative panel, made in the 20th century after pre-Columbian art, reprises their hieratic aesthetic.
