A large wall tapestry after the celebrated medieval hanging “The Lady and the Unicorn” (the Sight panel). The lady holding a mirror, the lion and the unicorn on a millefleurs ground.
A large wall tapestry measuring over two metres, reproducing “Sight”, one of the six panels of the celebrated Lady and the Unicorn series: the seated lady holds up a mirror to the unicorn, which contemplates its reflection, while the lion holds a banner, on a red millefleurs ground populated with animals.
The original series, woven around 1500 and housed in the Musée de Cluny in Paris, illustrates the five senses, the sixth panel, “À mon seul désir”, remaining enigmatic. Rediscovered by Prosper Mérimée in 1841 at the Château de Boussac and later made famous by George Sand, it ranks among the masterpieces of medieval art.
This reproduction, produced in the 20th century by André Demay and Georges Boitard, retains its label on the reverse.
