Description

A decorative icon of the 1950s–60s, this “witch’s eye” mirror features a radiating frame in gold-leaf giltwood. The convex glass creates a striking effect.

A radiating frame in gold-leaf giltwood, with rays of alternating lengths, surrounds a convex mirror that reflects the whole room in miniature.

The convex mirror, known as a “witch’s eye”, has a long history: it already appears in Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait (1434), and tradition credited it with the power to ward off the evil eye. Sunburst mirrors enjoyed great popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, championed notably by designers such as Line Vautrin.

At 45 cm in diameter, it brings light and character to an entrance hall or drawing room wall.
