An emblematic piece of Haitian ritual art depicting La Sirène, spirit of the waters.
La Sirène, with braided hair and a pink fish tail, stands out against a midnight-blue beaded ground within a green border. The name “LA SIRENE” is inscribed in the composition, and the work is signed “AZOR”.
In Haitian Vodou, Lasirèn is a spirit (lwa) of the waters, associated with beauty, wealth and healing; her attributes are the mirror, the comb and the trumpet. Vodou flags — drapo — are hand-embroidered with thousands of glass beads and sequins sewn one by one onto the fabric.
Roudy Azor, trained in the workshop of Myrlande Constant — a major figure in this art form — opened his own workshop in Port-au-Prince in 1998; he is one of the first men to gain recognition in the field of the beaded flag.

A richly decorated Vodou flag, presented under glass.

A large wall tapestry after the celebrated medieval hanging “The Lady and the Unicorn” (the Sight panel). The lady holding a mirror, the lion and the unicorn on a millefleurs ground.

A decorative icon of the 1950s–60s, this “witch’s eye” mirror features a radiating frame in gold-leaf giltwood. The convex glass creates a striking effect.

An Art Deco inkwell in glazed porcelain.
