Description

Oil on canvas depicting two Berber women in traditional dress, adorned with jewellery and henna tattoos. A scene imbued with tenderness and authenticity.

Two women seated side by side, dressed in brightly coloured traditional costume, adorned with silver jewellery and headscarves, their hands decorated with henna tattoos. The gaze of one, turned towards the viewer, lends the scene a powerful presence.

The subject belongs to the long tradition of Orientalist painting inaugurated by Delacroix with his “Women of Algiers in Their Apartment” (1834, Musée du Louvre). Here the brushwork is lively and the background simplified, giving prominence to the faces, fabrics and ornaments.

The canvas is presented in a gilt frame with a Greek key frieze.
