Description

Ink drawing with light gouache heightening, depicting horses, a cart and several figures on a beach. A fine, lively scene.

On the shore, horses harnessed to a cart, surrounded by busy figures: a small, lively scene drawn in ink and heightened with a touch of gouache.

In the 19th century, life on the beaches and in the ports of the Channel coast — the landing of the catch, the loading of carts, crowds on the shore — became a favourite subject for artists, one that Eugène Boudin helped to popularise. This drawing is a delicate testament to it, to be studied up close.

It forms a pair with “Beach Scene with Figures – Boat and Fishermen”, of the same format and in an identical frame.
