Description
Two matching oval oils on canvas, landscapes with towers and bridges, mid-20th century.
A pair of oil paintings on canvas conceived as pendants, each in an oval gilt frame decorated with a row of beading. They depict imaginary Italian landscapes: stone towers and bridges by the water, tall trees in autumn foliage and a luminous sky.
These compositions follow the tradition of the Grand Tour “capricci”, idealised landscapes combining nature and ancient architecture, prized as decoration since the 18th century. Both canvases are signed by a hand that could not be identified.
Sold together, they lend themselves to a symmetrical display on either side of a fireplace, a console or a doorway.
